What is a non-custodial crypto payment gateway (and why it matters)?

A non-custodial crypto payment gateway is one where payments go straight to the merchant's wallet — the provider only watches for incoming funds (watch-only) and never holds or controls the money. It matters because custodial intermediaries can freeze, lose or be hacked: if you don't hold the keys, you don't have control.

What does “non-custodial” mean?

In a custodial service, the money passes through an account controlled by the provider before it reaches you — it holds the funds and you depend on it to withdraw. In a non-custodial service, that doesn't happen: you register only your public key (an xpub, in Bitcoin's case) or your receiving address, and the customer's payment goes on-chain straight to your wallet. The gateway only watches the blockchain to confirm the funds arrived.

The industry rule of thumb says it well: “not your keys, not your coins”. Since Stackfy never receives your private key, it has no way to move, hold or block your money.

Why is custody a risk?

When a third party holds the funds, you're exposed to bankruptcies, fraud, hacks and freezes. The best-known case is the exchange FTX, which collapsed in November 2022 after misappropriating around US$ 8 billion in customer deposits.

US$ 12.7 billionwas the amount a court order (in a CFTC case, the U.S. regulator) required FTX to pay back to customers and victims after the collapse — the largest recovery in CFTC history. Money that was under the exchange's custody. — Source: CFTC (US)

In a non-custodial model, an event like that doesn't touch your settlement: the money was never in the provider's hands — it went straight to your wallet.

How does Stackfy do it?

With Stackfy you register only your wallet's public key/address (BTC via xpub; USDT via a Tron or Polygon address). From there:
